Proof of possession on the Ethereum blockchain
Lay claim to your history.
ProveIt is a decentralized application, or ĐApp, powered by Ethereum. Its value proposition is simple: users gain the ability to prove that they said or possessed something, anything, without the need to rely on a trusted intermediary. This is an extraordinary and unprecedented phenomenon with implications for intellectual property rights, credibility in peer-to-peer networks, and much more.
First, decide what text or file you want to be able to prove that you possessed.
Next, since ProveIt never stores unencrypted data, we have to compute a unique identifier for your submission. ProveIt uses a state-of-the-art hashing algorithm to ensure that the content of your submission remains anonymous while still allowing anyone to verify it. Any text or file you submit to ProveIt will automatically be processed with secure, client-side hashing. Advanced users are invited to compute and submit their own hashes (make sure to use Keccak-256!)
Finally, your identifier is submitted to ProveIt alongside an optional amount of ether you can lock up to provide credibility (the ether cannot be recovered without destroying the associated submission).
Congratulations, your submission is now immutably stored in the blockchain! At your discretion you can release the original text or file, allowing anyone to verify that you possessed it.
More information on ProveIt (including hypothetical use cases), and the entirety of the open-source codebase can be found on Github.
